LUCY MacGILLIS b. 1977 Massachusetts, USA

Photograph of Hugo Galerie artist Lucy MacGillis painting in the Italian countryside.

Lucy MacGillis is fueled by Italian light. After studying domestically and internationally at prestigious schools under renowned artists such as Nicolas Carone, MacGillis settled in Italy’s Umbria and has been painting her immediate surroundings ever since. Edited landscapes and vignettes present recurring themes natural to her bucolic location and insatiable eye. Canvases of decisive brushstrokes in limited palettes come alive in an array of tones created by the play of sun and shadow across their surfaces. It is these moments of darkness that lend her vistas depth and gravitas, preventing them from slipping into the land of fairytales and keeping them in the here and now. The artist’s commitment to her valley of inspiration is not only in subject, but also material, as she mixes earth into the oil paints she makes by hand.

MacGillis continues to teach classes across Europe and the United States, but always returns to her studio in Italy where she says “I need to be painting in that light; I don’t want to be doing anything else.”
